All of History Culminates in This Boyz II Men-Inspired Song About Silk Road

Earlier this month, the FBI shut down Silk Road, a website for buying and selling illegal drugs, and arrested its alleged mastermind and founder, Ross Ulbricht. It alleges that, along with making over $80 million off the site, he tried to order the murder of one of its users. “Not long ago, I had a clean hit done for $80K,” Ulbricht, who went by the name Dread Pirate Roberts on the site, is reported to have complained.

Now, a former user has bid adieu to Silk Road, in a video which you can’t not watch:

This is dripping with 2013-ness. I don’t even know where to start.

The creator’s drywalled room is adorned with a Japanese katana, a Chinese-style watercolor print, and maybe some IKEA furniture.

The singer’s wearing a mask meant to look like the face of a guy who tried to blow up the British Parliament in 1605. A similar mask was worn by a character in a 1980s comic series, V for Vendetta, by Alan Moore, which was then adapted into a 2005 film, also called V for Vendetta, and then the mask was adopted by the online hacker coven Anonymous. But now the mask just kind of stands for any anti-Establishment protest. It has appeared, for example, in the protests in Egypt.

And, of course, this hidden video creator is pantomiming to lyrics about an American-born drug marketplace named after a trading network which began in the 200s which linked East Asia and Europe.

Basically, what I’m saying is, History culminates in this video.
