Remember to pause today. For this young man who leaves a family. And a wife. Remember to respect the badge. But remember there's a man or woman behind that badge.

A young York Regional Police Officer will be laid to rest today.

He leaves a wife and two very young children. A chilling reminder for all of us here in cottage country.

Respect the badge. But more important. For god’s sake respect the man or woman behind that badge.

We’re not dealing with a nameless entity. In rural Ontario we’re dealing with coaches, mentors, family members and friends.

So you know what to do peeps. Pause at some point today to remember Melissa and the kids. But pause to remember Garrett Styles who died needlessly… in a moment when… alas one young driver forgot that he was dealing with a man. And not a badge.

God Bless.

Police are expecting at least 6,000 officers at the funeral.

A trust fund has been set up in the name of Melissa Styles at the Police Credit Union in Newmarket. The account number is 2000014 York Branch. The transit number is 63612.

Police say cheques should be made payable to: In trust for Melissa Styles or Melissa Styles in trust.

Cheques can be mailed to the Newmarket branch of the Police Credit Union, 18025 Yonge St., Newmarket, Ont., L3Y 8C9
