Something strange brews in Kawartha SouthWest Curling

Something has to be done about curling scheduling in the Kawarthas.

As in a team should not be penalized by qualifying for a prestigious provincial tourney like the Gore Provincial schoolboy and schoolgirl championships.

Here’s the thing.

Tom Dibblee’s Red Hawk curlers – skip Jesse Walker, third Owen Duhaime, second Mike Mazara, lead Tyler Warham and fifth Shawn Kadwell – won two games and dropped one in the Kawartha SouthWest division curling playdowns last Tuesday.

They defeated Brock (6-2) and IE Wedlon (7-4), but lost to St. Thomas (6-4) setting up an interesting little conflict.

The second half of the Kawartha Southwest Conference finals go today (Thursday, Feb 17) but the Hawks will have to forfeit their games against Fenelon Falls and Lindsay Collegiate.

Why?

Well because the team will be on the road to Ottawa for the Gore Provincials.

Now the good news is that five teams qualify to move on to the Kawartha Zone finals from the southwest division.

So the Hawks still have an inside chance.

I don’t think that’s good enough.

Kawartha should probably either get their act together and qualify Hal High automatically or failing that at least give a Gore finalists a little love, by allowing them to play Fenelon or LCVI at an appropriate time.

It’s not as if the Gore schedule isn’t posted years in advance.

Just sayin’. Can a brotha’ get an amen here?

Good luck Hawks.
